Tragedy struck in Axim, in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, when a fire gutted an apartment, leaving three children dead and three others with varying degrees of injuries.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night, destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The deceased, believed to be aged between five and ten, were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
A family of six occupied the apartment at the time of the fire.
The parents and their youngest child survived but sustained injuries.
Lord Listowel, a resident who confirmed the incident, described the harrowing scene.
“The parents and their youngest child survived, but the three other children couldn’t escape and were burnt beyond recognition. The survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Axim Government Hospital, but their condition is critical,” he said.
Kwame Asare, father of the deceased children, recounted the ordeal with deep sorrow.
“We went to bed around 9 p.m. after dinner. Around midnight, I heard a sound like thunder. Suddenly, everything went dark, and smoke filled the room. I managed to rescue my wife and one child, but I was helpless to save the others. By the time help arrived, it was too late,” he lamented.
The remains of the three children have been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital morgue for further investigations.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, the community is reeling from the devastating loss, with many calling for support for the surviving family members.
