The Agona West Constituency of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, over allegations of defection and misconduct.
The expelled members are accused of breaking party ranks to support Ms. Morrison’s independent candidacy for the 2024 parliamentary elections after she lost the party's internal primaries.
In a letter signed by the constituency chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the NPP stated that the individuals are no longer recognised as party members and are barred from holding any position, attending party events, or using NPP symbols.
Reports indicate that Ms. Morrison’s decision to contest as an independent candidate attracted backing from some constituency executives, polling station executives, and ward coordinators, leading to their expulsion.
The NPP’s action highlights its commitment to maintaining discipline and unity within its ranks ahead of the December 7 general elections.
