Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has emphasized the need for diversity in team dynamics and a shift from rote learning to critical thinking in higher education.
Speaking on Day 2 of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, she highlighted the importance of assembling multidisciplinary teams to drive innovation and problem-solving.
“The best teams I have seen are those that are diverse. If you have a team of three or four, and they are all inventors, it doesn’t quite work well. You need that inventor, you need that marketer, and you need the one who connects the dots,” she stated.
Prof. Amfo underscored the University of Ghana’s commitment to refining its curriculum, not only by improving content but also by transforming teaching methodologies.
She noted that while courses in critical thinking and academic writing are mandatory for students, a greater effort is required to encourage them to apply these skills across disciplines.
“Our students need to learn beyond individual courses and optimize knowledge across all areas. We are continuously reviewing our curriculum to ensure they stay abreast of modern learning innovations,” she added.
Her remarks at APD 2025 reinforced the role of education in shaping Africa’s future workforce, urging institutions to prioritize creativity, adaptability, and real-world problem-solving skills in their academic approach.
