Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and the NPP's 2024 Presidential Candidate, has committed to abolishing the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) within the first 100 days of his administration if elected.
Speaking at an event titled "Bawumia Hosts the Media" in Accra on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his government would prioritize the digitalization of Ghana’s economy, which he believes requires the removal of the E-Levy.
"We need to focus on the digitalization of the economy, and so the E-Levy will go," Dr. Bawumia stated.
He further explained that the removal of the levy is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and make Ghana a hub of innovation and business.
In addition to abolishing the E-Levy, Dr. Bawumia outlined other key initiatives his administration plans to implement within its first 100 days.
These, he noted, include introducing a flat tax regime, revising the tariff structure for businesses and residential customers, and launching the "Ghana First, Buy Ghana First" policy to boost local industries.
"We are going to be very hard at work to ensure that businesses can move quickly and create jobs," Dr. Bawumia asserted.
"These are things that we can do very, very quickly, and we are serious about business and job creation."
As the NPP gears up for the upcoming election, Dr. Bawumia’s pledge to abolish the E-Levy is likely to resonate with voters who have been critical of the levy’s impact on digital transactions and the broader economy.
