President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant reduction in the number of government ministries, cutting them down from 30 to 23 as part of a sweeping reform to enhance public service delivery and reduce government expenditure.

The announcement, made through an Executive Instrument dated January 9, 2025, marks the fulfillment of one of President Mahama's key campaign promises to create a leaner, more focused, and cost-effective government.

This decision forms part of a broader strategy to reconfigure the country’s governance structures, aimed at fostering greater accountability and efficiency within the public sector.

The restructuring involves the merging of several ministries to streamline decision-making processes and improve operational effectiveness.

President Mahama exercised his constitutional authority under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327), to implement these changes.

By reducing the size of government, Mahama seeks to deliver on his commitment to ensure a results-driven administration while addressing concerns about high public sector costs.

This bold step underscores the President’s determination to reform Ghana’s governance framework for improved service delivery and economic efficiency.
