Nana Addo Boahen, the Chief of Nahinso in the Ashanti Region, has taken a bold stand to protect his community by repairing hazardous roads that have been neglected for eight years.
Despite his efforts to improve safety, he now faces legal repercussions.
Nana Addo Boahen explained that the poor condition of the roads is a result of extensive sand winning activities that took place years ago.
"Some time ago, my predecessor and others won sand here, and the Asokwa Municipal Assembly collected levies"
"This sand winning created a vacuum, making the roads dangerous," he stated.
Frustrated by the inaction of local authorities, the chief decided to take matters into his own hands. "This place has become a death trap for my people"
"I am doing my best to fix the situation, even though I was not the one who created the mess," he said.
However, the Asokwa Municipal Assembly insists that Nana Addo Boahen did not follow the proper procedures before initiating the roadworks.
As a result, he was arrested and later granted bail.
The assembly's position underscores the importance of adhering to established regulations for infrastructure projects, but the chief's arrest has sparked a broader conversation about the urgent need for government intervention in local communities.
Nana Addo Boahen's actions highlight the desperate situation in Nahinso and the challenges local leaders face when trying to address critical issues without adequate support.
As legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on finding a sustainable solution to the neglected roads, ensuring the safety and well-being of Nahinso's residents.
