President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to uphold fairness and consistency in handling disputes arising from the results of nine constituencies still under contention.
Addressing African ambassadors and high commissioners in Accra on Friday, December 20, Mr. Mahama expressed concerns over what he described as the EC’s inconsistency in applying its rules.
He stressed the need for impartiality in resolving electoral disputes to maintain trust in the electoral process.
“The EC must act in a principled manner. You cannot change the rules when it suits you or apply different standards based on the circumstances,” he stated.
Referencing the 2020 elections, he highlighted a similar scenario in Techiman South, where results were declared amidst chaos and under military presence.
“In that instance, the EC insisted that any grievances be addressed in court. We expect the same approach now, regardless of the parties involved,” Mr. Mahama added.
His comments follow an announcement by the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, that the commission would not uphold parliamentary results from nine constituencies due to claims that declarations were made under duress.
The affected constituencies include Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Dome-Kwabenya.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, December 19, Madam Mensa assured the public that proper procedures would be followed to address the disputes.
She stated, “The declarations made by our staff under threats are considered illegal, and we will ensure that due process is followed.”
She further urged both the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the incoming President, John Dramani Mahama, to prioritize the safety of EC officials amid rising tensions.
As the nation awaits the resolution of these disputes, stakeholders are calling for a transparent and fair process to safeguard the integrity of Ghana's democratic institutions.
