Vice President and Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service to uphold professionalism and ensure a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free general election in December.
Speaking at a ceremony held at the National Police Training School in Accra to commission 430 newly promoted officers to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Dr. Bawumia emphasized the critical role the police play in safeguarding democracy and maintaining public confidence.
Commending the Ghana Police Service for its commitment and success in managing previous elections, he remarked on their contribution to national peace and stability but cautioned against any lapse in vigilance.
Dr. Bawumia urged the service to intensify its efforts amid current security challenges and heightened political tensions.
"Every election presents its unique set of challenges," he said.
"We are, however, confident in the professionalism of the police. The police are always at the center of elections in Ghana, and officers must act responsibly.”
Dr. Bawumia lauded the neutral, fair, and firm approach that has characterized past policing efforts during elections, adding that recent successes during the voter registration and exhibition exercise provide a strong foundation for December’s main elections.
“The Ghana Police Service, you have done it before, and we are counting on you to do it again by maintaining high professional standards in the discharge of your duties. You are setting the perfect tone for the nation to follow in delivering a peaceful and incident-free election," he stated.
Dr. Bawumia further highlighted the government’s ongoing investment in police training, logistics, and equipment as essential in bolstering the service's capacity to handle electoral security and maintain overall public safety effectively.
As December’s election draws closer, the Vice President’s message underscored the critical importance of the police in upholding the democratic process and ensuring a peaceful election atmosphere across Ghana.
