Former two-term Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam, has officially defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant shift in her political allegiance.
Madam Klenam, who served in the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic and later held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC) under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, publicly announced her decision on Thursday.
Speaking at a brief ceremony in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region, where she received her NDC membership card, Klenam declared her commitment to the party’s vision and leadership.
In an interaction with the media, Klenam explained that her decision to join the NDC was driven by ideological alignment and confidence in the party’s policy direction.
"Upon consultation with my family, I decided to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for mother Ghana," she stated.
She further expressed strong support for the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, describing it as the most comprehensive blueprint for national development.
According to her, after thoroughly reviewing the party’s policies, she is convinced that former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership offers the best path to progress and prosperity for Ghanaians.
Madam Klenam emphasized her readiness to work closely with the NDC’s grassroots structures to empower local communities and create sustainable opportunities for young people.
She underscored the urgent need to address the increasing migration of Ghanaian youth in search of better prospects abroad.
Her defection is expected to boost the NDC’s campaign efforts, particularly in engaging voters who previously supported the NPP.
The move comes at a crucial time as Ghana prepares for the 2024 general elections, with both major political parties intensifying their outreach efforts to secure voter confidence.
