Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the Gagbiri Inland Checkpoint in the Tempane District have successfully intercepted two drums of cocoa beans being smuggled into Togo.

Acting on intelligence, the officers, under the Pulimakom Sector Command, stopped a tricycle loaded with the cocoa beans attempting to cross into Togo via Wurianaga, an unapproved route.

The suspect, upon spotting the officers, abandoned the goods and fled.

Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, Michael Amoako-Atta, confirmed that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the owner of the smuggled cocoa beans.

In response to this incident, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kwame Asuah Takyi (Esq.), has directed all Border Commanders to intensify patrols along known smuggling routes.

He has also urged engagement with local communities to raise awareness about the economic impact of smuggling.

The GIS remains committed to securing Ghana’s borders and preventing illegal activities that threaten the country’s economy.
