Energy Minister, John Jinapor has urged African leaders to foster unity and collaboration to ensure a sustainable and reliable energy future for the continent.
Speaking on the topic "Delivering Affordable, Accessible, and Sustainable Energy Solutions for Africa" during the APD 2025 event at the Accra International Conference Centre on January 31, Jinapor underscored the critical role of regional cooperation in addressing Africa’s energy challenges.
He highlighted that over 600 million people across the continent still lack access to electricity, a gap that continues to hinder economic growth and poverty reduction, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
"In order to achieve a sustainable energy future, Africa must work together. It is only through collaboration that we can unlock the continent’s full potential, overcome the energy crisis, and drive inclusive development," Jinapor stated.
The Energy Minister also outlined Ghana’s strategic efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure, emphasizing a strong commitment to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects.
"To meet the energy needs of our growing economy and ensure sustainable development, Ghana is prioritizing solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as part of our broader energy transition plan," Jinapor explained.
He further emphasized that renewable energy is essential for reducing the country’s carbon footprint, expanding energy access, and supporting industrialization, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
"Solar, wind, and mini-hydro offer immense potential for Ghana to meet its energy demands while also reducing the environmental impact of fossil fuels," he added.
John Jinapor noted that Ghana is well-positioned to lead the region’s transition to sustainable energy, given its abundant natural resources and favorable conditions for renewable energy development.
He called on other African nations to adopt similar strategies, stressing that a united approach is crucial for achieving universal energy access and long-term sustainability.
Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy and enhancing energy efficiency.
He called on policymakers, investors, and stakeholders to support innovative energy solutions that promote affordability, accessibility, and environmental sustainability across Africa.
"As we work towards a future where every African has access to reliable electricity, it is imperative that we harness our collective strengths and embrace sustainable energy solutions," he concluded.
The APD 2025 conference, which brought together energy leaders, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, continues to serve as a platform for advancing discussions on Africa’s energy future.
