Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has underscored the urgent need for salaries in the public sector to match workers’ actual contributions, emphasizing that productivity must drive remuneration.

Addressing Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, Dr. Pelpuo expressed concern over the productivity gap between the public and private sectors.

"He noted that despite the government’s heavy wage bill, the output from public sector workers does not always justify the expenditure.

“We must ensure that every worker’s salary reflects their actual contribution. The government spends significantly on salaries, yet productivity remains a challenge. We need a system where output is worth the input,” he stated.

To bridge this gap, Dr. Pelpuo pledged to work closely with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to implement policies that enhance efficiency, ensuring that the government gets value for money.

He acknowledged the complexity of the issue but reaffirmed his commitment to tackling it head-on.

"It’s a constitutional matter, and we must approach it with serious thought and collaboration,” he added.

His remarks signal a strong push for salary reforms aimed at improving accountability, efficiency, and fairness in the public sector.
