The Electoral Commission (EC) has advised the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to swiftly nominate a new Presidential Candidate following the untimely passing of their 2024 flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor.
Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC, stated, “We have informed the Ghana Freedom Party to nominate a new candidate and inform the Commission accordingly."
He explained that the EC has been working within the framework of Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution, which allows for a ten-day extension for new nominations should a presidential candidate pass away before the election.
As part of the response to this unexpected situation, the EC has also announced the suspension of the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was nearly completed.
The EC is working closely with the GFP to facilitate the necessary processes in time for the upcoming election.
