"NPP has not learnt its lessons" – Dr. Sammy Ayeh

NDC's spokesperson for youth development, Dr. Sammy Ayeh has criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its handling of Ghana's economy.

Dr. Sammy Ayeh accused the NPP of using the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war as excuses for their economic mismanagement.

Speaking on an Accra-based television network on Wednesday, Dr. Ayeh pointed out inconsistencies in the government's financial reporting, particularly regarding the use of COVID-19 funds.

“The NPP government claims to have received $32 billion for COVID-19, spent $12 billion, and yet there remains an excess of $120 billion. How do they explain this?” he queried.

He further argued that the NPP’s narrative of global crises being the sole reason for Ghana’s economic struggles does not align with available facts.

"Countries across the world voted out governments that used COVID-19 as a cover for poor governance. The people of Ghana also saw through this and voted against the NPP in many areas during the last election. They are tired of these excuses."

Dr. Sammy Ayeh also took issue with the state of the country’s public transportation system and rising national debt, which he said paints a grim picture of the economy.

“You’ve left this country without buses and a debt-to-GDP ratio of 72%—even the World Bank puts it at 82%. How can this be described as a strong economy compared to the 56% under John Mahama’s administration?”

He concluded by calling on the NPP to stop disrespecting Ghanaians with "false narratives" and focus on addressing the country’s challenges with honesty and accountability.

The remarks come amidst heightened political tensions as the country gears up for the 2024 general elections.
