Akwesi Agyeman, a member of the Black Stars' management committee, has called for patience with head coach Otto Addo despite Ghana’s shock failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – a first in 21 years.
With the Black Stars currently sitting in fourth place in Group F of the qualifiers with just three points and one game left, pressure has mounted on Addo, with sections of the public calling for his dismissal.
However, Mr. Agyeman believes such a move could harm Ghana's long-term football prospects and derail their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
“He’s been brought back to build something for the long term. If you consider the long-term vision, consistency is essential," Agyeman told Hitz FM.
"Football is about results, yes, but right now, in just a few months, we have two critical games against Chad, home and away, to keep our World Cup hopes alive. I don’t think this is the right time for a change,” he added.
The Black Stars are scheduled to resume their World Cup qualification journey in March 2025, with fixtures against Chad and Madagascar.
Mr. Agyeman emphasized the importance of stability during this critical period, warning that a managerial shake-up could jeopardize the team’s chances of making it to the global stage.
Ghana’s AFCON elimination has left many fans disappointed, and discussions around the team’s future direction are expected to intensify in the coming months.
