Pope Francis has expressed gratitude to well-wishers worldwide in a brief audio message, his first public communication since being hospitalized on February 14.
The 88-year-old Pontiff, who was initially admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for bronchitis, was later diagnosed with pneumonia affecting both lungs.
His message, recorded earlier in the day, was played during a nightly prayer service in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.
Earlier this week, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis had suffered two episodes of respiratory failure and had been placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
However, his condition has since stabilized, and he is now receiving treatment with a high-flow oxygen mask.
His health concerns have forced him to cancel multiple engagements, including the Ash Wednesday service, which marks the beginning of Lent.
Despite his absence, prayers for his recovery continue at the Vatican and around the world.
