"Prioritize persons with disabilities at polling stations to ensure full participation" – CHRAJ boss to election officials

The Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Dr. Joseph Whittal, has called on election officials to prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs) during the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Dr. Whittal emphasized the need for inclusivity and accessibility at polling stations to ensure that PWDs exercise their right to vote without barriers.

His remarks coincided with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, underscoring the significance of creating an inclusive electoral process.

“We urge election officials to ensure that persons with disabilities are given priority at polling stations. It is critical that they are fully included in the electoral process without any impediments,” Dr. Whittal stated.

This appeal forms part of CHRAJ’s broader efforts to safeguard the integrity of the elections.

Dr. Whittal also disclosed that the commission has trained and deployed 300 personnel nationwide to monitor and document activities at polling stations, using tools designed to uphold transparency and fairness.

As Ghana approaches a crucial electoral period, Dr. Whittal’s call reinforces the need for adherence to ethical standards and the promotion of inclusivity in democratic processes.
