A heavy rainstorm accompanied by strong, gusty winds and lightning on Tuesday afternoon caused significant destruction across Accra, leaving a trail of damage in its wake.

At the ANC Mall in East Legon, the storm brought down the solar panel roofing over the car park, crushing over 50 vehicles beneath the collapsed structure.

Eyewitnesses reported that the powerful winds that accompanied the downpour around 5:30 p.m. were responsible for the collapse.

Speaking to authorities at the scene, they confirmed that no casualties had been recorded despite the severity of the incident.

The Ghana National Fire Service swiftly responded to the scene and is working to ensure the area is safe and secure.

The rainstorm also caused disruption in other parts of the capital.

The sudden downpour, which followed a sunny morning, also worsened the evening rush-hour traffic, prompting calls for police intervention to ease the gridlock.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency had issued an alert earlier in the day, warning of a possible storm, but the intensity of the winds and the resulting damage caught many off guard.

Emergency services remain on the ground at ANC Mall, assessing the damage and assisting affected vehicle owners.
